RUCHCUTTERS BAY ROOF TERRACE

This project brief is to formalise an existing roof terrace with a new contemporary extension on top of a 1920s building

The roof terrace is for the exclusive use of the apartment below. A new stair penetration is extended over the existing access stairs and penetrates the roof with a simple steel and louvred glass box. A fine steel roof creates a floating canopy providing shade to the terrace. The terrace itself is a timber deck floating above the existing structure of the building.

The new elements are contemporary and complement the existing 1920s brick structure by being lightweight and recessive on top of the building. The dominance of the facades remains and reinforces the existing building’s heights and the silhouette maintains its relationship to the neighbourhood.
