STANMORE KITCHEN
This is a renovation to the kitchen of an Art & Crafts terrace house located in Stanmore in Sydney’s inner west. The concept was to create a “man shed” for a medical specialist who likes to cook and entertain.
The design is structured, masculine and robust and consists of two major elements: a large wall unit running the full length of the western wall, and an adjacent island bench.
The wall unit is articulated by the insertion of a new steel column and beams, which replace an existing dividing wall. The areas within these new zones are further sub-divided by joinery elements to create functional zones such as cooking, an appliance zone containing coffee machine, toaster and Kitchen Aid, cold storage containing the fridge, and laundry zone and storage above. The island unit becomes the work zone and interacts with the functional zones behind.
Industrial items, appliances and finishes are used to enforce the functionality of each element, such as aluminium roller shutters to cover the appliance cupboard and laundry area, industrial cooker, oven and fridge and stainless steel lining are used for surfaces around the both cooking and appliance areas. Timber and marble are added to contrast and soften the robust mechanical finishes and add warmth and texture.
